Chinese engineers are training an AI-powered robot to skate.

In a significant leap for embodied artificial intelligence, Chinese engineers at institutions like the University of Science and Technology of China and firms such as Unitree Robotics are training a new generation of robots to master the complex dynamics of skating. Using a specialized 25-degree-of-freedom humanoid aptly named SKATER, researchers have implemented deep reinforcement learning to teach the machine “swizzle” motions—a technique where the robot propels itself by repeatedly widening and narrowing its stance without lifting its feet. Unlike traditional bipedal walking, which is energy-intensive and taxing on mechanical joints, this AI-driven skating approach significantly reduces the Cost of Transport (CoT) and increases operational endurance, making it a highly efficient mode for urban traversal. By utilizing “sim-to-real” training pipelines, these robots are learning to autonomously adapt to various surfaces and inclines, shifting the paradigm from rigid, pre-programmed movements to fluid, human-like athletic grace that could eventually see humanoid agents navigating city streets with unprecedented speed and efficiency.

Addis Skatepark in Ethiopia is expected to be demolished to make way for a football field.

The proposed demolition of Addis Skatepark, Ethiopia’s first concrete skate sanctuary, marks a bittersweet turning point for the capital’s urban landscape as the city prioritizes large-scale athletic infrastructure. Since its construction in 2016 through a massive grassroots effort by Ethiopia Skate and Make Life Skate Life, the park has served as a vital community hub for youth in the Sar Bet area, fostering a unique culture of creativity and inclusion. However, with Addis Ababa currently undergoing an aggressive “Corridor Project” modernization and preparing a bid for AFCON 2029, the land is slated to be repurposed for a football field—a move that underscores the ongoing tension between niche community spaces and the government’s focus on mainstream sports like football. While the loss of the original concrete park is a significant blow to the local skate scene, it highlights the urgent need for the city to integrate diverse recreational spaces into its rapidly evolving “New Addis” master plan.
